Because technology integration is a foundation of 21st century teaching and learning. By ensuring that all new teachers have the same professional learning opportunities when they begin teaching we build teacher capacity and improve student outcomes. Focusing on new teachers’ digital skills is a culture shift. It is an acknowledgement that proficiency, even mastery of, blended and virtual learning skills and mindsets is as imperative as all other onboarding requirements.
Because in order to ensure that all students learn, that educational opportunities are equitable and inclusive, curriculum and lesson planning must include UDL. By foreseeing barriers for specific student groups and planning for ways to avoid or get over them, educators open pathways for all learners to succeed. The integration of technology is often the answer for those roadblocks. Assistive technologies and multi-modality delivery of content are two examples of the ways in which planning with UDL principles can open up doors for all learners.
Because in order to facilitate learning, educators must be able to use the most impactful tools. They must model the ways in which their students will navigate their education and their careers. They must be able to show their students the power of proficiency in digital tool usage. They need to embed practices in their teaching and in their students’ learning that are effective, efficient, and safe. As technology progresses quickly, schools should assess the distance teachers and students have traveled on their journeys to digital literacy, so that they can respond with differentiated and intentional learning experiences to move them forward.
